How to Calculate Pip Value in Forex Trading

Understanding pip value is fundamental to forex trading. Every trade you place, every stop-loss you set, and every profit target you define depends on knowing exactly how much each pip is worth in your account currency.

This guide explains the pip calculation formula, provides worked examples for major and exotic pairs, and links to our free pip value calculator for instant results.

What is a Pip?

A pip stands for "percentage in point" or "price interest point." It represents the smallest standard price movement in a currency pair:

  • For most pairs (EUR/USD, GBP/USD, etc.): 1 pip = 0.0001
  • For JPY pairs (USD/JPY, EUR/JPY, etc.): 1 pip = 0.01

Some brokers quote prices with an extra decimal — called a "pipette" or "fractional pip." A pipette is 1/10th of a pip. For example, a quote of 1.08505 is 0.5 pips above 1.0850.

The Pip Value Formula

The basic formula for calculating pip value depends on whether USD is the quote currency:

When USD is the Quote Currency (EUR/USD, GBP/USD, AUD/USD)

Pip Value = (0.0001 / Exchange Rate) × Lot Size

For pairs where USD is the quote currency, the pip value is approximately $10 per standard lot, $1 per mini lot, and $0.10 per micro lot, regardless of the exchange rate.

When USD is the Base Currency (USD/JPY, USD/CAD, USD/CHF)

Pip Value = (0.01 / Exchange Rate) × Lot Size

For JPY pairs, the pip size is 0.01 instead of 0.0001.

For Cross Pairs (EUR/GBP, AUD/NZD, etc.)

For cross pairs, an additional conversion step is needed. The pip value is first calculated in the quote currency, then converted to your account currency using the relevant exchange rate.

Worked Examples

Example 1: EUR/USD (USD account)

For 1 standard lot (100,000 units) of EUR/USD at an exchange rate of 1.0850:

Pip Value = (0.0001 / 1.0850) × 100,000 = $9.22

In practice, for EUR/USD with a USD account, 1 pip is always approximately $10 per standard lot.

Example 2: USD/JPY (USD account)

For 1 standard lot of USD/JPY at 149.50:

Pip Value = (0.01 / 149.50) × 100,000 = $6.69

The pip value varies for JPY pairs because the pip size (0.01) is different from standard pairs (0.0001).

Example 3: EUR/GBP (USD account)

For 1 standard lot of EUR/GBP at 0.8580:

The pip value is first calculated in GBP (the quote currency), then converted to USD:

Pip in GBP = (0.0001 / 0.8580) × 100,000 = £11.66
Converted to USD = £11.66 × GBP/USD rate

Example 4: USD/ZAR (USD account)

For 1 standard lot of USD/ZAR at 18.50:

Pip Value = (0.0001 / 18.50) × 100,000 = $0.54

Exotic pairs like USD/ZAR have lower pip values per standard lot but higher volatility, which can compensate.

Pip Value by Lot Size

Lot TypeUnitsPip Value (EUR/USD)Pip Value (USD/JPY)

Mini10,000~$1.00~$0.67
Micro1,000~$0.10~$0.07

Why Pip Value Matters

  • Position Sizing — Knowing pip value lets you calculate how many lots to trade based on your risk per trade. Use our position size calculator.
  • Stop-Loss Placement — A 50-pip stop-loss on EUR/USD with 1 standard lot = $500 risk. Is that appropriate for your account size?
  • Profit Targets — Calculate expected returns before entering a trade. Use our profit/loss calculator.
  • Comparing Pairs — Different pairs have different pip values. A 50-pip move on EUR/USD is worth more than a 50-pip move on USD/JPY.

Common Mistakes When Calculating Pip Value

  • Forgetting the lot size — Pip value depends entirely on position size. Always calculate per lot.
  • Assuming pip value is always $10 — Only true for standard lots of EUR/USD. Other pairs and lot sizes differ.
  • Ignoring account currency — If your account is in EUR but you trade USD/JPY, the pip value must be converted.
  • Confusing pips with pipettes — A pipette is 1/10th of a pip. Make sure you're using the correct unit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a pip in forex?

A pip (percentage in point) is the smallest standard price increment in a currency pair. For most pairs it equals 0.0001; for JPY pairs it equals 0.01.

How much is 1 pip worth?

For 1 standard lot of EUR/USD, 1 pip is worth approximately $10. For a mini lot it's $1, and for a micro lot it's $0.10. The value varies by pair and lot size.

How do I calculate pip value?

Use the formula: Pip Value = (Pip Size ÷ Exchange Rate) × Lot Size. Or use our free pip value calculator for instant results.

What is a pipette?

A pipette is 1/10th of a pip. Some brokers quote prices with 5 decimal places instead of 4, showing fractional pips for more precise pricing.

Does pip value change?

Yes. Pip value changes slightly with the exchange rate (for non-USD quote pairs). For pairs where USD is the quote currency, pip value is fixed at ~$10 per standard lot.

Which pairs have the highest pip value?

Major pairs with USD as the quote currency (EUR/USD, GBP/USD) have the highest pip values at ~$10 per standard lot. Exotic pairs tend to have lower pip values.
